John Dunlop

Voodoo is a musical gumbo stirring together music, art, community, cuisine and all the mystery and adventure that Halloween weekend in New Orleans conjures up. With more than 65 bands over three days, Voodoo is more than just a Festival – it is an experience.

There’s plenty to do in between sets. Across the Festival Grounds of City Park, Voodoo hosts interactive and immersive large-scale art installations, the Brew Dat Beer Hall, a handcrafted shopping experience at the Market Place, and more.

Voodoo attracts the mystics, madmen, femme fatales, gods, goddesses, and music lovers of all kinds under one collective consciousness.

Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival - 10/18-20/2019

John Dunlop

The Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival is an award-winning event, with two stages of music, a dozen of the best barbecue vendors in the region and a huge arts market. The 14th edition of this community celebration of Southern soul is bound to be one for the record books. Admission is free! This is, after all, an event produced and presented by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation – the nonprofit that owns Jazz Fest and uses the proceeds from that world-famous festival for free, year-round programs in education, economic development and cultural enrichment.

Houma guitar hero Tab Benoit, the legacy-continuing Allman-Betts Band, R&B “swing” singer Tucka, slide guitar maestro Sonny Landreth, soul belter Erica Falls, harmonica ace Johnny Sansone, guitar shredder Jonathon Boogie Long, gospel legends the Zion Harmonizers and New Orleans blues favorite Little Freddie King are just a few of the great artists who will perform. Don’t miss it!

Gentilly Fest - 10/11-13/2019

John Dunlop

Gentilly Fest celebrates all things "Gentilly," including continuous live music on the main stage and gospel tent. Local restaurants and caterers sell sumptuous food and an Arts and Crafts area featuring original works from a variety of craft merchants. The festival also offers children’s activities including pony rides, a kid’s village, and a variety of practical recovery information offered by local business and non-profit organizations. The Gentilly Fest is a 501c3 organization that provides monetary support to the New Orleans Police and Fire Departments that serve the Gentilly community. We also contribute to organizations that provide a recreational or cultural enrichment to our children. This year, Gentilly Fest will also donate funds to Pontchartrain Park and Milne Playground sports programs as well as The Roots of Music.

Happy Birthday, Louis Armstrong!

John Dunlop

Louis Armstrong, also known as Satchmo, Satch, and Pops, was born in New Orleans on August 4, 1901. He is the most famous and influential jazz musician of all time, and was a beloved American icon and cultural ambassador. He was born into poverty, learned to play the coronet at the Colored Waif’s Home for Boys in 1913, and emerged as a trumpet virtuoso whose highly inventive, improvised solos transformed jazz. His distinctive, gravelly voice and charismatic stage presence propelled him to great popularity, both at home and internationally, and not just with his musical recordings, but on radio, films and television. He has innumerable popular songs, but he is best known for the heartwarming “What A Wonderful World” and the cheerful “Hello Dolly”, for which he won a Grammy in 1964. Armstrong passed away in his sleep from a heart attack, a month before his 70th birthday, on July 6, 1971. A 12-foot statue of Armstrong, trumpet in hand, is located in Louis Armstrong Park, located in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans, just across from the French Quarter.

Satchmo Summerfest is the premier American festival dedicated to the life, legacy, and music of New Orleans' native son, Louis Armstrong, and it takes place at the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the U.S. Mint on August 2–4, 2019.
