Happy Birthday, Ben Jaffe!

Preservation Hall creative Director, tubist and double bass player Benjamin Jaffe was born in New Orleans on January 26, 1971, and is the son of Preservation Hall's founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe. Jaffe grew up in New Orleans' French Quarter, two blocks from Preservation Hall. His father, Allan, in addition to managing the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Preservation Hall, played tuba with the band as well. From birth, Ben was brought on tour with the band during their international tours. Ben’s early musical memories are marching alongside his father in Mardi Gras Parades and jazz funeral processions. He began playing in grammar school at McDonogh 15 School for the Creative Arts in the French Quarter. During high school at NOCCA, he studied upright bass under Walter Payton. After high school, Ben attended Oberlin College where he received a degree in bass performance in 1982.

Following his graduation, Ben returned to New Orleans, resumed his father's position as manager of the Preservation Hall venue and joined the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on tour playing bass and tuba. Jaffe produced a number of albums for the Preservation Hall band, and co-produced the band's first album of original compositions "That's It," alongside My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James. Ben serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Preservation Hall Foundation, the charitable non-profit that serves the mission to "protect, preserve and perpetuate New Orleans jazz music and culture." Celebrating the Birthday of Allan Jaffe

Jazz tubist and entrepreneur Allan Phillip Jaffe was born on April 24, 1935, in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and is the person who developed Preservation Hall into a New Orleans jazz tradition, along with his wife Sandra. Jaffe's grandfather was a French hornist, his father was a mandolin player and teacher, and Jaffe learned piano and cornet before settling on tuba in junior high school. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania before joining the Army and being stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Following his discharge in 1961, Jaffe moved to New Orleans where he took over management of Preservation Hall. As owner, he played a major role in the New Orleans jazz revival of the 1960s, shepherding the latter-day careers of numerous musicians. He also played the tuba in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and took the group on tours worldwide, booking them into the finest music and performance halls and making appearances at cultural events of note even in small communities.

Sadly, Jaffe passed away in New Orleans on March 9, 1987. But, his legacy lives on as his son, Ben, now leads and performs with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Today we celebrate someone who helped preserve and promote the musical heritage of New Orleans.

Preservation Hall presents "‘Round Midnight Preserves" on Saturday, June 20th!

Preservation Hall presents ‘Round Midnight Preserves, a benefit event, on Saturday, June 20th, at 8pm NOLA time & 6pm L.A. time. ‘Round Midnight Preserves will feature a series of unforgettable musical collaborations, never-before-seen performances from past Midnight Preserves, and commentary from Preservation Hall Creative Director Ben Jaffe and director Danny Clinch. Special guests include Irma Thomas, Jon Batiste, PJ Morton, Dave Grohl, Elvis Costello, Beck, Jim James and Nathaniel Ratliff.

Preservation Hall is normally open 360 days a year, with members of their Musical Collective performing 3-7 shows per night for upwards of 170,000 people annually, and participating in year-round music education initiatives through the Preservation Hall Foundation during the day. Since mid-March, the Hall has been closed, and our Collective of 60 musicians are without work and without income. Funds raised during the program will benefit the Preservation Hall Foundation and the Collective’s musicians, providing for their well-being during this crisis, and ensuring a solid future for the generations of New Orleans musicians still to come. Spotify has pledged to match donations to help provide support and resources to the members of the Collective.
