Happy Birthday, Ben Jaffe!

Preservation Hall creative Director, tubist and double bass player Benjamin Jaffe was born in New Orleans on January 26, 1971, and is the son of Preservation Hall's founders Allan and Sandra Jaffe. Jaffe grew up in New Orleans' French Quarter, two blocks from Preservation Hall. His father, Allan, in addition to managing the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Preservation Hall, played tuba with the band as well. From birth, Ben was brought on tour with the band during their international tours. Ben’s early musical memories are marching alongside his father in Mardi Gras Parades and jazz funeral processions. He began playing in grammar school at McDonogh 15 School for the Creative Arts in the French Quarter. During high school at NOCCA, he studied upright bass under Walter Payton. After high school, Ben attended Oberlin College where he received a degree in bass performance in 1982.

Following his graduation, Ben returned to New Orleans, resumed his father's position as manager of the Preservation Hall venue and joined the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on tour playing bass and tuba. Jaffe produced a number of albums for the Preservation Hall band, and co-produced the band's first album of original compositions "That's It," alongside My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James. Ben serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Preservation Hall Foundation, the charitable non-profit that serves the mission to "protect, preserve and perpetuate New Orleans jazz music and culture." Celebrating the Birthday of Allan Jaffe

Jazz tubist and entrepreneur Allan Phillip Jaffe was born on April 24, 1935, in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, and is the person who developed Preservation Hall into a New Orleans jazz tradition, along with his wife Sandra. Jaffe's grandfather was a French hornist, his father was a mandolin player and teacher, and Jaffe learned piano and cornet before settling on tuba in junior high school. He studied at the University of Pennsylvania before joining the Army and being stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Following his discharge in 1961, Jaffe moved to New Orleans where he took over management of Preservation Hall. As owner, he played a major role in the New Orleans jazz revival of the 1960s, shepherding the latter-day careers of numerous musicians. He also played the tuba in the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and took the group on tours worldwide, booking them into the finest music and performance halls and making appearances at cultural events of note even in small communities.

Sadly, Jaffe passed away in New Orleans on March 9, 1987. But, his legacy lives on as his son, Ben, now leads and performs with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Today we celebrate someone who helped preserve and promote the musical heritage of New Orleans.

Happy Birthday, Shannon Powell!

Jazz and ragtime drummer Shannon Powell was born in the Tremé neighborhood of New Orleans on April 8, 1962, and by age six he was playing drums regularly at church. While still in grammar school, Powell met legendary musician Danny Barker and eventually became a regular member of Danny Barker & His Original Jazz Hounds. His first paying gig was with that band at Jazz Fest, when Powell was just 14 years old. In high school, Powell became a member of New Orleans Finest, trumpeter Leroy Jones’ first band, and went on to study at the Black Academy of Arts, joining pianist Willie Metcalf, Jr.’s band, along with classmates Wynton and Branford Marsalis.

Powell toured with Harry Connick, Jr., from 1987 to 1992, and released two platinum albums with him. Powell has toured with Wynton Marsalis, Diana Krall, Dr. John, Earl King, and the Preservation Hall Jazz.  He has also recorded with numerous prominent artists, including Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, Donald Harrison, Irvin Mayfield, Leroy Jones, Blind Boys of Alabama,  John Boutté, Kermit Ruffins, Charmaine Neville, Henry Butler, George Porter, Jr., and Snooks Eaglin.

Powell is a regular at Jazz Fest and has toured internationally, and now plays with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. He leads his own quartet with Jason Marsalis, Steve Masakowski, and Roland Guerin, and has recorded "Powell's Place," a CD which features Powell’s vocals on a mix of traditional and original jazz songs. In addition to being a leader on the traditional jazz circuit, Powell also serves as an educator. If you don’t catch him at workshops presented at universities and jazz festivals all over the world, you can see more of him in Tradition is a Temple, the 2011 documentary film about New Orleans musical culture. Musician Treatment Foundation Benefit Concert on Saturday, July 18!

Preservation Hall Jazz Band is headlining the first-ever Musician Treatment Foundation Livestream Benefit Concert, a benefit concert to help #KeepTheMusicPlaying for everyone! This event also includes performances by Elvis Costello, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, The Accidentals and many other incredible musicians. The event will take place this Saturday, July 18, at 7 pm NOLA time and 5pm L.A. time, on mtfusa.org/events/livestream-benefit-2020.

The concert is a fundraiser to help provide healthcare for musicians who help make New Orleans the musical and cultural treasure it is. This is not a live event, but there are musicians, artists and guests who will be speaking throughout. And though tickets are free, you must register. So, kick back, put your heels up, pour your favorite beverage, and enjoy some of the best music in the land!
