Happy Birthday, Kermit Ruffins!

Jazz trumpeter, singer, and composer Kermit Ruffins was born in New Orleans on December 19, 1964. Strongly influenced by Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong, Ruffins personifies the laid-back New Orleans vibe, performing New Orleans jazz standards and his own music. He co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band while he was still in high school, and they went on to revolutionize New Orleans brass bands and achieve great success and acclaim. After touring the world for about 10 years, Ruffins began to miss his hometown and decided to go solo. Over his career, he has put out over 15 albums, performed on the soundtrack to Disney’s Jungle Book, and played himself in the HBO series “Treme”. When he’s not at Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge, barbecuing outside or entertaining inside, or dazzling fans and friends at Kermit’s 9th Ward Juke Joint, he works to preserve and pass on the tradition of jazz. Tremé / 7th Ward Arts & Culture Festival - May 28 -29!

Tremé and the 7th Ward have given life to some of New Orleans’ (and the world’s) most famous works of art, music, and culture. To celebrate these historic, thriving areas, the Tremé/7th Ward neighborhoods host an annual, free spring festival (usually every Memorial Day Weekend) that features neighborhood tours, bar crawls, a Gospel breakfast, and a Congo Square second line!

Under the Bridges Arts and Culture Festival

This free two-day music festival is open to the public and takes place in the spring under I-10 between Basin Street & St. Bernard Avenue along North Claiborne Avenue. Attendees can expect to see live music legends, local cuisine, and crafts, as well as community organizations and city partners who will share the history and significance of these neighborhoods.

Additional Information

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Gospel breakfast, Congo Square second line, tours of the neighborhoods, panel discussions, and more.

Happy Birthday, Glen David Andrews!

Trombonist and vocalist Glen David Andrews was born in New Orleans on April 26, 1980. Andrews hails from a musical family, with grandfather Jesse Hill of “Ooh Poo Pa Doo” fame, brother Derrick Tabb of Rebirth Brass Band, cousin of brothers Troy “Trombone Shorty” and James Andrews, and cousin to the late Travis “Trumpet Black” Hill. Andrews learned about brass bands from greats like Tuba Fats and by second line parades in the Tremé neighborhood of his youth. And, at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Andrews mesmerizes audiences with his showmanship and energy. He is a beloved and charismatic live performer, and today we join in the celebration.
